Reese Witherspoon: Thank you! [ pause ] Wow.. it's really difficult to be here right now. I know, traditionally, the hosts of "Saturday Night Live" always say, "It's great to be back in New York.." - and, it is - but recent events have made coming back seem a little awkward. For one thing, the writers had to spend all week struggling to find funny things to write, without doing it in such a way as to offend the families of the victims of the attacks. There were a number of sketch ideas that we eventually just didn't think we would feel comfortable performing here in the city.. especially not knowing if we would definitely be on the air, or interrupted by breaking -
Announcer: We interrupt the following program for an imporant announcement.
Dan Rather: Good evening. Dan Rather of CBS, filling in for Tom Brokaw, who's asleep. Me, I've been up for over 430 hours straight, since the Attack on America. No new develops in Washington, or in the whereabouts of Osama Bin Laden. As for good news tonight - long-running comedy program "Saturday Night Live" is airing their 27th season premiere tonight, with host Reese Witherspoon and musical guest Alicia Keys. If you'll look above my right shoulder, you'll notice the young actress delivering the "monologue" portion of the show, as she discusses the prevailing mood of the city at large. Many NBC staffers were concerned that recent events in the world would cause the live comedy show to be interrupted by live news reports. Such is not the case, as President Bush seems to have things under control for the night. Still, I will continue to stay awake, in the event that something exciting should happen.. and also because my favorite show, "The Howard Stern Radio Program" will be on in less than twenty minutes. I can hardly wait! From all of us here at NBC and CBS, and, what the heck, ABC, FOX and UPN.. we wish you well this evening.
Announcer: This has been an important announcement from CBS's Dan Rather. Now, back to our previously-scheduled programming.
Reese Witherspoon: ..but, all things considered, we do have a great show for you tonight. Alicia Keys is here. Yeah! So sit back, try to laugh, and we'll be right back!
